How to Choose the Right BJJ Gi Size: A Complete Guide

Getting your gi size right isn't just about comfort — it's about performance. A gi that's too loose gets grabbed. One that's too tight restricts movement. This guide cuts through the confusion so you can train with confidence.

Why Gi Sizing Matters

BJJ gis are not sized like regular clothing. Manufacturers use their own sizing systems — typically A0 through A5 for adults and M0 through M4 for kids — and cuts vary significantly between brands. A size A2 from one brand may fit very differently from an A2 in another.

At DRVN, our gis are cut for performance: a tailored fit through the shoulders and chest, with enough room through the hips and legs for full guard play.

How to Measure Yourself

Before checking any size chart, take three measurements:

  • Height — stand straight, measure from floor to crown
  • Weight — your current training weight
  • Chest — measure around the fullest part of your chest, arms relaxed at your sides

These three data points will place you accurately on our size chart. If you're between sizes, consider your build: broader shoulders and chest? Size up. Lean and long? Size down or stay true.

Understanding Gi Shrinkage

Pre-shrunk gis exist, but most competition-grade gis will shrink slightly after the first wash. Our gis are pre-washed to minimise post-purchase shrinkage — but we still recommend cold wash and air dry to preserve the weave and keep the fit consistent over time.

DRVN Size Guide

Refer to our full size chart pages for exact measurements in centimetres:

  • Adult Gi Size Chart — covers A0 to A5, with height, weight, and chest ranges
  • Kids Gi Size Chart — covers M0 to M4, with age and height guidance

If you're still unsure after checking the chart, reach out. We'd rather help you get it right the first time.

Competition Fit vs. Training Fit

IBJJF regulations require that gi sleeves end no more than 5cm from the wrist and gi pants end no more than 5cm from the ankle. If you compete, factor this in when sizing — especially if you're between sizes or have a longer limb-to-torso ratio.

For training-only use, a slightly more relaxed fit is fine and often preferred for drilling and positional work.

Final Word

The right gi fits like a second skin — present enough to feel, absent enough to forget. Take your measurements, check the chart, and when in doubt, go with the size that fits your chest and shoulders. Everything else can be adjusted.
